First Blog Post – Scientists Leaving the US
Posted in :

For my first blog post, I was inspired by a youtuber named Asturico to hurry along my work on my Spain dashboard.
I have wanted to get this website up for a very long time. As I mention in the About page, I started compiling tables of data in Spring, 2022 when Ukrainians were spilling into Canada soon after the Russian attack in February.
I worked on that dashboard everyday in my evenings and weekends- it was all I did for a month, but I barely published anything at the time- I was exhausted and overwhelmed with the project. From learning how to use Stats Canada’s API’s to learning how to set up a website, mentally, it grew beyond a simple offering. Now I’ve gone back into my old files and realized that not much needed to be done for them to be cleaned up and published. This website is a response to the fact that everyone is moving now; there’s migration happening all over the world. Americans are feeling unsafe and going where they hope to find some democracy. Europeans are leaving Europe too, so lots of paths are crossing.
So as I mentioned about this video, this woman lives in Spain with her husband and she tells an interesting story. Her huband had the idea to write a letter to the president of Spain, reminding him of his pledge to stem the Spanish brain drain. He suggested Spain take advantage of scientists leaving the US and hire as many as possible, and the president has a very cool response.
In that spirit, here is a chart of public Spanish universities and their Shanghai ratings. This is just the universities that had ratings. The entirety of the list is on the Spain page.
